The first credit union was started in Delitzsch, in Germany, in 1850.
Now there are 291 million members of 86,000 credit unions in 118 countries around the world.
Between them they have built up £1.58 billion of savings, and have borrowed £1.35 billion of loans.
In these 15 countries over half the population are credit union members.
